By-the-Call SEO Manual

The By-the-Call SEO Manual is the working doctrine for DataForSEO: nine playbooks (SERP bench, keyword expansion, rank checks, competitor teardown, backlink gap, scoring, AI-citation probes, ledger), a budget gate that reads your own account's price grid before any call, and the traps we paid for. Built from a 134-call calibration ($2.35) and a full read of the 758-page official documentation.

What it does: The month you stop paying for the suite, use DataForSEO's pay-as-you-go APIs instead, with the cost of every call known before it is made and a playbook for each job.

What it will never do: Will never quote a price the documentation does not print. The manual reads your account's price grid; it does not carry a tariff.

RUN PROOF
CALIBRATION 2026-08-26 · 134 billed calls, $2.35, one evening, both MCP servers: a Bing organic endpoint truncating keywords server-side, the `cost` field dropped in API v2, bulk keyword difficulty left unscored, AI-mode fields empty in v3. Blog plan of 2026-09-06: 54 topics benched for $0.41 with a written cap of $1.00.

Instrument: the DataForSEO account ledger (`id_list`) for 2026-08-26 and 2026-09-05, kept in dated audit folders.

What is inside

The budget gate (free user_data call: balance, spend today, your price grid), the endpoint selector, the MCP-versus-script routing table, nine playbooks with their exact requests and the cost we paid, the dated pricing rules (the docs print no prices; limits are 100 tasks per POST, 2,000 requests a minute, 30 concurrent), the four AI-citation probes, and the ledger routine. Plus the calibration report: what each MCP server actually returns, with the surprises.

No ship date is set: a system goes on sale the day its payment test passes. You get one dated note then, with the price frozen and the run proof attached. No sequence, no countdown.

By-the-Call SEO Manual: questions

Does the manual reproduce DataForSEO's documentation?

No. It links the official pages and tells you which endpoint to call, what it costs on your own account grid, and what we got wrong. The documentation is theirs and stays on their site.

Does the manual include DataForSEO credits?

No. You open your own account and deposit your own $50 minimum. The manual makes sure you know what each call costs before you make it.

Does it do what a suite like Semrush or Ahrefs does?

It does not try to. It gives you raw SERP, keyword and backlink data by the call, with each call's cost known before you make it. A dashboard and a keyword database are what a suite sells, and the manual does not carry either. The operators in our persona research who cancelled a suite wanted the first thing, not the second.
